Rooted, Built Up, and Thankful: Growing Strong in Christ (Colossians 2:6-7)

Greetings, PBC Family and Friends!

As we prepare our hearts for this Sunday’s message, I want to share with you a powerful passage from Paul’s letter to the Colossians that has been stirring my spirit: Colossians 2:6-7. These familiar verses remind us that receiving Christ is only the beginning of a beautiful journey—a journey of spiritual growth, steadfastness, and heartfelt thanksgiving.

Receiving Christ: Our Firm Foundation

Paul says, “As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him.” The word “received” (παραλαμβάνω – paralambanō) means more than just saying a prayer; it means truly embracing Jesus as our Lord and Savior with all our heart. This initial step is the foundation on which our entire faith is built. If you have received Jesus, congratulations! Your spiritual journey has begun on the firmest rock.

Walking in Christ: Living Day by Day

But Paul doesn’t stop there. He urges us to walk (περιπατέω – peripateō) in Him. Walking speaks of a daily, ongoing relationship—living our lives with Jesus as our guide in every decision, every moment. It means staying close to Him in prayer, letting His Word direct our paths, and reflecting His love to those around us. It’s a walk of faith, hope, and obedience.

Being Rooted, Built Up, and Established

Paul uses two beautiful images here — being rooted (ῥιζόω – rhizoō) and built up (οἰκοδομέω – oikodomeō). Imagine a tree planted by streams of water, its roots going deep, drawing strength and nourishment. That’s how our faith should be—deeply anchored in Christ. And being “built up” reminds us that we don’t stagnate; we’re growing, maturing, becoming more like Him every day. Faith must be established, firm against life’s storms.

Abounding in Thanksgiving: A Heart Overflowing

Finally, Paul encourages us to abound in thanksgiving (εὐχαριστία – eucharistia). A grateful heart keeps us humble and joyful, even when times are tough. When you count your blessings, you find strength; when you thank God daily, your faith is energized.

Why Does This Matter to You?

Whether you are new to faith or a seasoned believer, this passage is a challenge and an invitation. Are you simply relying on having “received” Christ in the past, or are you walking daily with Him, growing deeper in root and strength? Is your heart overflowing with gratitude for all He has done?

Beloved, spiritual maturity is a journey, not a destination. Paul invites us to remain steadfast, growing and thriving in Christ. This Sunday, let’s walk that journey together.
